Supplementary cementing materials (SCMs) contribute to the properties of hardened concrete through hydraulic or pozzolanic activity. Fly Ash is the most commonly used SCM and is a by-product of coal combustion. When Fly Ash is used in union with Portland Cement, every tonne of ash that is used reduces approximately .882 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

Fly Ash doesn’t only contribute to sustainable construction, when properly specified and applied in concrete it can:
• Improve resistance to sulphate attack
• Improve resistance to Alkali Aggregate Reactivity (AAR)
• Decrease permeability
• Reduce shrinkage and thermal cracking
• Lower heat of hydration over straight cement
• Improve workability
• Improve pumpability
• Increase 56-day strength
• Fly Ash is also used extensively to help to achieve LEED points (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
